Anxiety, anxiety!
Anxiety shows up in so many ways! At times, it is hard to know what is ‘what.’
Typically, I see anxiety come up as nervousness, restlessness, excessive worry, heaviness in the chest, “butterflies” in the stomach, trouble remembering, feelings of being uncomfortable, nausea, shallow breathing, agitation – and most frequently in my experience through intrusive and repetitive thoughts!
You might have never called it “anxiety” before – until someone mentioned that this might be what you are experiencing.
You tend to be “on edge” more often then not. You think of the future and the past – and have difficulty being present in the moment.
Your anxiety takes you places you would rather actually not be. There are typically 3-5 thoughts spinning around, it feels repetitive… almost obsessive.
You find yourself less patient at work, as well as at home with your kids. At times, you feel tension headaches.
You have difficulty sleeping at night and wake up frequently with more worries. Worries that really don’t need to be addressed right at that moment – yet they take over… they keep you up. You feel tired in the morning and are irritable throughout the day…
It has become really challenging just to “be” – to be still. To be present.
Anxiety might have taken over.
Your nights are restless, and your days are tiresome. You feel more agitated during the day and have difficulty completing your To-Do lists.
You find yourself arguing more with your family and feel like “just getting by.” You don’t leave your house as often as you used to – and avoid social gatherings. You feel alone.
You cry more then you used to and exercise less because you
are so tired from the night before. You talk fast – but say less.
There is this nagging voice telling you that you aren’t doing things right. It feels impossible to change.
Good news – anxiety can be treated in a variety of ways. Therapy is one of them.
I focus on the intrusive thoughts. Ever hear thoughts like, “I am not good enough,” “I am unworthy,” “You can’t do anything right,” “This will never change,” “I will never get better”?
You are not alone. Intrusive and negative thoughts are common.
If you are looking for solutions versus a temporary relief to change these thoughts, then you have come to the right place!
Clients who have worked with me can learn to recognize what a negative and intrusive thought is, tie it back to their core beliefs (how we see ourselves and others in the world), and CHANGE them!
Thoughts are just thoughts. Emotions are just emotions. They are intense, hurtful, silly, happy, and many more.
I like to observe the intrusive thoughts clients experience and work to change them. This allows my clients to change how they feel and act.
Change is possible. Anxiety can be treated.
Let’s start today to work toward a calmer and happier state of mind, so you can enjoy your interactions and moments with your loved ones.
